Legislators blast developers<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The House of Representatives expressed concern
\nyesterday that most major developers have failed to abide by a
\nruling requiring them to build three medium-class and six low-
\ncost houses for each luxury house they construct.<\/p>\n
Freddy Latumahina of the Group faction said in a hearing
\ninvolving House Commission V and State Minister of Public Housing
\nAkbar Tandjung here that the developers of the Lippo Cikarang
\nhousing complex, for example, have not built low-cost houses
\nthere even though a number of luxury houses have been
\nconstructed.<\/p>\n
Other House members voiced their fear that such shirking of
\nresponsibilities had also happened at many other developments.<\/p>\n
Minister Akbar affirmed that his office will continue to
\npressure developers to build low-cost houses along with luxurious
\nhouses.<\/p>\n
He did not specify why the developers had not yet fulfilled
\nthe requirement.<\/p>\n
But analysts point out that the small profit margin in the
\nconstruction of modest houses is the main factor contributing to
\ndevelopers' reluctance to build this type of house.<\/p>\n
Both the minister and the House members agreed that the
\nhousing issue could easily turn into a political problem if the
\ndevelopment of modest houses does not proceed as expected.<\/p>\n
The 1:3:6 ratio requirement is also seen as an attempt to
\nnarrow the widening gap between rich and poor, a problem many
\nanalysts consider increasingly urgent.<\/p>\n
The analysts voiced this view after a series of housing
\nproblems in Jakarta and outside recently. Among them was the case
\nof a developer that absconded with investors' money.(13)<\/p>",
