Legislators asked to acquire greater business knowledge<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Businesspeople called yesterday on the newly
\nelected members of the House of Representatives to acquire a
\ngreater knowledge of the economy and business so they can better
\nunderstand the country's rapidly developing economy.<\/p>\n
Chairman of the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry
\nAburizal Bakrie said yesterday the newly elected House members
\nshould be more knowledgeable in the current economic situation.<\/p>\n
"Not only should they know about macroeconomics, they must
\nalso be aware of the microeconomic situation, as it changes
\nrapidly," he said after the swearing in ceremony of the members
\nof the House and the People's Consultative Assembly.<\/p>\n
Chief Justice Sarwata, in the presence of President Soeharto,
\nswore in the 500 members of the House of Representatives (DPR)
\nand the 1,000 members of the People's Consultative Assembly
\n(MPR).<\/p>\n
The MPR comprises the 500 DPR members and 500 presidential
\nappointees representing the political parties, the military, the
\nprovinces and nonpolitical groups.<\/p>\n
Of the DPR members, 425 are elected while the remaining 75 are
\nappointed by the President from the military, who do not vote.<\/p>\n
The MPR will meet in March to choose the President and vice-
\npresident, and set out the broad policy guidelines for the next
\nfive years.<\/p>\n
Bakrie, who was appointed yesterday a member of the Assembly
\nrepresenting the business sector, said having a greater knowledge
\nabout the economy would help legislators better communicate with
\nbusiness executives and help them form more effective economic
\npolicies.<\/p>\n
Special team<\/p>\n
Bakrie, also the chief commissioner of the Bakrie Group,
\nsuggested a special team be established to handle business and
\neconomic issues.<\/p>\n
The team, represented by each of the House factions, should
\nunderstand all aspects of the country's economic activities, said
\nBakrie, more popularly called Ical.<\/p>\n
The team members should also have the capacity to understand
\nglobal economic activities so they would be more objective in
\nmaking judgments about the economic situation overseas, he said.<\/p>\n
Notable businessman Sudwikatmono said yesterday he was hopeful
\nthat the new legislators would help the country's private sector
\nfurther develop.<\/p>\n
President of publicly listed Indocement Tunggal Prakarsa,
\nSudwikatmono, said he expected the new House members would aspire
\nmore to the needs of the private sector in facing tougher
\nchallenges in economic globalization in the coming years.<\/p>\n
"The new legislative must improve further and adapt to the
\nchanging environment," he said.<\/p>\n
Both Ical and Sudwikatmono expressed their optimism with the
\nnew legislators.<\/p>\n
"I'm optimistic they will contribute to the development of our
\ncountry, as civilians we need to help them and give them as much
\ninput as possible, because in them we place our faith," Ical
