A Jakarta legislator has urged authorities to protect Satpol PP officers after 35 members died within a year due to excessive workloads and inadequate rest facilities, emphasising that the state must safeguard rather than merely demand from its public servants. He called for a comprehensive review involving the provincial government, personnel agencies, and budget planners to implement humane working patterns, gradual staff increases, proper field rest areas, and routine health protections. Deputy Governor Rano Karno supported adding personnel to the understaffed force, noting the heavy burden currently affecting officers' health.

Jakarta (ANTARA) - Member of Commission A of the DKI Jakarta DPRD,
Kevin Wu, emphasised that the DKI Jakarta Civil Service Police Unit
(Satpol PP) must not become victims of an unprepared working system
following the death of 35 members within a year.

“Satpol PP must not become victims of an unprepared system. The state
is obliged to be present to protect them, not just to demand that they
work,” Kevin said when contacted on Tuesday.

According to him, the deaths of dozens of DKI Satpol PP members in a
year, linked to workload burdens and minimal rest facilities, cannot be
considered normal.

This indicates real issues in human resource management and field
operational support. This problem is not solely the responsibility of
DKI Satpol PP, but the Regional Personnel Agency (BKD) also needs to pay
attention to it.

“It must be viewed more broadly, starting from the DKI Provincial
Government as a whole, including the BKD which regulates personnel needs
and distribution, Bappeda in planning budget priorities, BPKD in
providing financial support, to the Governor as the regional leader in
determining policy direction,” Kevin stated.

Looking ahead, Kevin hopes this can be addressed immediately.
Improvements must start from evaluating work patterns to make them more
humane, gradual addition of personnel, provision of adequate field rest
facilities, to routine health protection for members.

“We will also monitor this in future budget discussions and
performance evaluations. The point is, we cannot talk about city order
while ignoring the condition of the people who maintain that order
themselves,” he said.

Previously, Deputy Governor of DKI Jakarta Rano Karno approved the
proposal to add personnel to the DKI Civil Service Police Unit (Satpol
PP), which is currently still under ideal levels.

“Imagine, even firefighters need 11,000 personnel. If Satpol PP
requests 5,000, it might be possible, but gradually,” Rano said in
Jakarta on Saturday.

Responding to the 35 Satpol PP members who died in a year, Rano said
this also needs attention.

For this reason, he assessed that adding Satpol PP personnel is
necessary because the current number is still below ideal, making the
workload quite heavy and impacting health conditions.
",
