        "content": "<p>Jakarta, VIVA \u2013 A member of Commission IV of the Indonesian House of\nRepresentatives (DPR RI), Rajiv, has requested a temporary halt to\nreclamation activities on Serangan Island, Bali. This is intended to\nfacilitate an evaluation to prevent further widespread damage and ensure\nthat development proceeds without harming the ecosystem and local\ncommunities. He also called on the central and regional governments to\nevaluate the reclamation activities that have been ongoing for nearly\nfour decades on the island. \u201cI request the temporary suspension of all\ndevelopment activities, reclamation, land compaction, vegetation\nclearing, and the use of heavy machinery in the Serangan Island area,\u201d\nRajiv stated in his remarks on Monday, 27 April 2026. He explained that\nthis temporary halt would continue until all permitting documents, land\nstatus, environmental impact assessments, and spatial planning\ncompliance are thoroughly examined in an open manner. According to him,\nthis step is not an anti-investment stance but a precautionary mechanism\nto prevent broader damage and ensure that development does not come at\nthe expense of the ecosystem and local communities. Rajiv also\nhighlighted the extensive reclamation on Serangan Island, Bali, and the\ndestruction of mangrove ecosystems. Over the decades, the reclamation\nhas caused drastic changes to the landscape. Based on spatial data he\nobtained, from 1985 to 2024, due to the reclamation of Serangan Island\u2019s\ncoastline, its area has increased from 169.64 hectares to 600.96\nhectares. \u201cOver nearly four decades, the area of Serangan Island has\ngrown by 431.32 hectares. That means, on average, it expands by 10\nhectares each year,\u201d he revealed. Rajiv stated that Serangan Island,\nformerly a small island serving ecological, social, cultural, and\neconomic functions for coastal communities, has now undergone drastic\nlandscape changes due to reclamation. \u201cThe main issue with the\nreclamation of Serangan Island is not merely the addition of land, but\nthe loss of the ecological functions of the coastal space that\npreviously supported local community life,\u201d he said. Research conducted\nby scientists from Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) records that the\nreclamation policy on Serangan Island\u2019s coast has caused negative\nimpacts such as coastal abrasion, loss or damage to ecosystems, and\nsocial conflicts due to the loss of livelihoods and land acquisition\nissues. \u201cThere is academic research by UGM researchers that finds the\nimpacts of reclamation are not only physical but also affect the right\nto life of coastal communities who have long depended on the sea,\nmangroves, and traditional fishing grounds,\u201d he said.<\/p>",
