Legislative-executive synergy needed<\/p>\n

The People's Consultative Assembly (MPR) and the House of
\nRepresentatives (DPR) should operate according to their scope of
\nauthority and should not maneuver to resist president-elect
\nSusilo Bambang Yudhoyono's government during the next term.<\/p>\n
These comments were made by new MPR Speaker Hidayat Nur Wahid,
\nwho also said any attempt by members of the two institutions to
\ngo beyond their legislative authority would cause confusion in
\ngovernment and in the running of the public administration.<\/p>\n
Agung Laksono, following his election as House speaker, also
\nshared the view that DPR members should become a balancing
\ncounterpart instead of a spoiling opposition. He hoped there
\nwould be no moves to confront the new president.<\/p>\n
The prediction of an unhealthy schism arising between the next
\ngovernment and the MPR-DPR has mostly come from some of the
\npolitical elite, who point to the small number of party members
\nsupporting Susilo and vice president-elect Jusuf Kalla in the
\nlegislative institutions.<\/p>\n
Legislators should be well aware that besides representing
\ntheir parties, they are expected by their electorates to make a
\npositive contribution to the government to help the country go
\nforward smoothly.<\/p>\n
To this end, good legislative-executive relations and synergy
\nare needed.<\/p>\n
