After enjoying independence for more than half a century,
\nIndonesia still retains law inherited from the Netherlands, its
\nformer colonizer. Various legal terms remain in Dutch, which is
\nunderstood by only a handful of people in the country.<\/p>\n
One such law concerns the mining sector. Mining companies
\noften need explosives to operate. General mining firms that
\nproduce copper, iron, silver, gold and other minerals usually
\ndemand large quantities of explosives.<\/p>\n
When they apply for permits for their explosives magazines,
\nthey generally face difficulties because the provisions in force
\nstill follow colonial rules, which allow only small quantities,
\nagainst the actual needs of giant companies in this development
\nera.<\/p>\n
Another example is the recent news that in order to secure
\nland certificates, 500 farmers in Lampung had to wait for 44
\nyears.<\/p>\n
Ironically, in spite of the fairly large number of law
\ngraduates, the ministry in charge of legal reform in Indonesia is
\nseemingly slow to act: How come?<\/p>\n
