Agus explained that framing is a technique to influence public\nopinion by presenting information in a specific context. This technique\nis usually carried out through selective presentation of information,\nthe use of emotions, and the creation of simple narratives that are\neasily accepted by the public.<\/p>\n
Agus gave an example of how framing practices occurred in\ninternational history, particularly leading up to the US invasion of\nIraq, which resulted in the fall of Saddam Hussein.<\/p>\n
One classic example is the story of Nayirah al-Sabah, who gave an\nemotional testimony on 10 October 1990 before the Congressional Human\nRights Caucus in the United States. Nayirah claimed that Iraqi soldiers\nremoved babies from incubators in Kuwaiti hospitals until they died.<\/p>\n
This testimony shocked American public opinion and was cited by\nPresident George H. W. Bush to justify military intervention. However,\nit was later revealed that Nayirah was the daughter of the Kuwaiti\nAmbassador to the US, and her testimony was scripted by the public\nrelations firm Hill & Knowlton without valid evidence.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis is a classic example of how propaganda is used to influence\npublic opinion and political decisions,\u201d said Agus in his official\nstatement to reporters on Tuesday (24\/3\/2026).<\/p>\n
He also mentioned a recent case that has the potential to trigger a\nmajor conflict, namely allegations of an attempt by Ukrainian and\nBritish intelligence to steal a Russian MiG-31 fighter jet.<\/p>\n
According to a report from Russia\u2019s Federal Security Service, the\nplan involved bribing a Russian pilot with millions of dollars and\nforeign citizenship in exchange for flying it to a NATO base in Romania.\n\u201cIf it had not been uncovered, this could have become a provocation\nleading to a broader conflict,\u201d said Agus.<\/p>\n
Furthermore, Agus linked the framing phenomenon to the acid attack\ncase against activist Andrie Yunus, which is alleged to involve four\nrogue members of the Indonesian National Armed Forces Strategic\nIntelligence Agency (BAIS TNI). He said he appreciated the Indonesian\nNational Armed Forces\u2019 swift action in arresting and announcing the\nsuspected parties involved. According to him, this shows a change in\napproach towards transparency in maintaining public trust.<\/p>\n
However, he reminded the public not to be easily provoked and to wait\nfor the investigation process carried out by the TNI Military Police to\nbe completed. \u201cDon\u2019t let us be pitted against each other by certain\nparties who want to create instability. Give space to law enforcement to\nuncover the real facts,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
He stated that based on the current case developments, the\npossibility of a third party attempting to create framing to discredit\nthe TNI and government institutions is not impossible. This is evident\nfrom questions such as why CCTV footage was not erased if the action was\ncarried out professionally. Agus questioned the motive behind the\naction, especially after the approval of the TNI Law by the DPR the\nprevious year.<\/p>\n
