Criminal law expert from Trisakti University, Azmi Syahputra, has\ncommended the Corruption Eradication Commission\u2019s (KPK) decision to\nrevoke the house arrest status of former Minister of Religious Affairs,\nYaqut Cholil Qoumas, and return him to the detention centre on Monday,\n23 March 2026.<\/p>\n
Azmi views this decision as the KPK\u2019s response to public criticism\ndemanding equal treatment for all corruption suspects.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe KPK\u2019s swift revocation of the former Minister\u2019s house arrest\nstatus is a victory for the principle of equality before the law. This\nis evidence that the public voice serves as the best alarm for justice,\u201d\nAzmi stated in Jakarta on Tuesday (24\/3\/2026).<\/p>\n
According to Azmi, the short-lived revocation of house arrest status\ndemonstrates that the KPK still prioritises integrity as a key parameter\nin its policies. He emphasised that the law must not grant special\ntreatment to certain parties.<\/p>\n
He assessed that returning Yaqut to the detention centre is crucial\nfor restoring public trust that was eroded by the controversy over the\nstatus change.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis action is very important as a correction to avoid perceptions\nof \u2018privilege\u2019. It sends a positive signal that KPK leadership is\nwilling to correct controversial policies,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n
While appreciating this corrective step, the Secretary General of the\nIndonesian Criminal Law and Criminology Society (MAHUPIKI) reminded the\nKPK to be more selective and transparent in granting detention\ndiscretions in the future. This aims to prevent further public\nunrest.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe lesson from this incident is a stark reminder that the public is\nnot asleep. When the KPK listens to criticism and revokes controversial\ndiscretions, that is when hope for accountable anti-corruption efforts\nreignites,\u201d Azmi asserted firmly.<\/p>\n
Previously, the KPK officially revoked the house arrest status of\nformer Minister of Religious Affairs, Yaqut Cholil Qoumas (YCQ), and\nreturned him to the KPK detention centre. KPK Spokesperson Budi Prasetyo\nconfirmed that the process of reverting the type of detention for Yaqut\nwas carried out today, Monday (23\/3\/2026), or the third day of Eid\nal-Fitr.<\/p>\n
\u201cToday, the KPK carried out the process of reverting the type of\ndetention for Suspect Mr.\u00a0YCQ in the alleged corruption case regarding\nHajj quotas, from house arrest back to KPK detention centre detention,\u201d\nBudi stated in his official remarks in Jakarta.<\/p>\n
Budi said that before being returned to the cell, Yaqut must undergo\na series of medical procedures. Currently, Yaqut is at Bhayangkara\nHospital Level I R. Said Sukanto (RS Polri), Kramat Jati, East Jakarta,\nto ensure his health condition.<\/p>\n
\u201cIn the process, a series of health examinations for the individual\nare required. For now, the examination by doctors is still ongoing at\nBhayangkara Hospital. We all await the results of this health test,\u201d\nBudi continued.<\/p>\n
Budi stated that this change in detention status will not hinder the\nlegal process. He affirmed that the KPK is committed to promptly\ncompleting the case file so it can be handed over to the prosecution\nstage in court as soon as possible.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe ensure that the investigation of the case will continue to\nprogress in accordance with applicable mechanisms and legal provisions,\nto complete the investigator\u2019s file and hand it over to the prosecution\nstage promptly,\u201d he emphasised.<\/p>\n
Furthermore, Budi expressed appreciation to the public for\ncontinuously monitoring this case, especially after the controversy over\nhouse arrest that sparked criticism from various parties, including\nformer investigators and academics.<\/p>\n

Previously, the KPK changed the type of detention for Gus Yaqut from\nKPK detention centre detention to house arrest on Thursday (19\/3). This\nchange was based on a request from the family on 17 March 2026.<\/p>\n
The request was granted considering Article 108 paragraphs (1) and\n(11) of Law No.\u00a020 of 2025 on the Criminal Procedure Code.<\/p>\n
This detention change was for a certain period. During this detention\nchange, the KPK maintained close supervision and security for Gus\nYaqut.<\/p>\n
