Legal aid office burned<\/p>\n
MEDAN, North Sumatra: A group of unidentified people set fire
\nto the building of the local chapter of the Indonesian Legal Aid
\nInstitute (LBH) early yesterday, activists have claimed.<\/p>\n
Medan LBH spokesman Mahjoedanil said the fire broke out
\nfollowing a loud explosion at around 2.30 a.m. yesterday.<\/p>\n
The fire occurred only about 10 hours after the police
\nforcibly dispersed a gathering called to form a local branch of
\nthe Independent Election Monitoring Committee that the government
\nis fiercely opposed to.<\/p>\n
The fire did not cause injury but caused extensive damage to
\nthe building and destroyed computers, furniture and documents,
\nAntara reported.<\/p>\n
Mahjoedanil said the fire, which started in the basement of
\nthe ancient two-story building, caused the LBH losses of several
\nhundred million rupiahs.<\/p>\n
\"The police should investigate the incident,\" he said. \"The
\nburning of the LBH premises is an immoral act. Any differences
\npeople have with the LBH should be settled in a civilized
\nmanner.\"<\/p>\n
In operation since 1978, the LBH currently has 30 lawyers.
