Lecturer's dismissal<\/p>\n

The dismissal of Arief Budiman from his post as lecturer in
\npostgraduate studies on development at Satya Wacana Christian
\nUniversity, in Salatiga, Central Java, as of Oct. 31, 1994,
\ncoupled with clashes with student military regiments in the
\ncapital, clearly indicate that anti-democratic and anti-
\nreformation elements have penetrated university campuses.<\/p>\n
Arief Budiman views his dismissal as intellectual harassment
\nand as an insult to the commitment to democracy and justice, as
\nwell as to humanism. He says the action can even be regarded as a
\nviolation of the law and that the perpetrators can be sued.<\/p>\n
In this context, the Indonesian Environmental Development
\nOrganization appeals to the university's bureaucracy to withdraw
\ntheir decision to dismiss Arief Budiman and to restore his honor
\nand intellectual rights, both as academician and scholar.<\/p>\n
Arief Budiman has won national, as well as international, fame
\nand honor and is deeply committed to environmental and societal
\nissues. By maintaining the decision, the university's
\nadministration has to run the risk of more widespread
\ndemonstrations and of facing the increasing political impact of
\nthis case.<\/p>\n
What is really behind Arief Budiman's dismissal? Wouldn't it
\nbe much better and more honorable for the university authorities
\nto settle the problem internally, without interference from a
\nthird party. By so doing the university could demonstrate its
\nmaturity as one of the most prestigious universities in Central
\nJava.<\/p>\n
