Learning from history<\/p>\n
Vice President Try Sutrisno hopes that the documentary film
\nabout the history of Indonesia's struggle during the reign of the
\nDutch Governor General, De Jonge, until the 1950s, compiled by
\nthe 10 November Foundation, is broadcast nationwide. According to
\nthe vice president, the film is very important, particularly for
\nthe younger generation, because they will learn of the hardships
\nexperienced by the older generation in achieving the country's
\nindependence.<\/p>\n
The younger generation is required to be well versed in the
\ncountry's struggle for independence. In the 17th century the
\ncolonial rulers always succeeded in crushing the people's
\nstruggles by applying the principle of divide et impera (divide
\nand rule). But the beginning of the 20th century saw the strategy
\nof the struggle change from the regional to the national level.
\nNationalism and loyalty were disseminated and developed in the
\npeople, who adopted the motto: Freedom or death.<\/p>\n
Historical films will teach the younger generation the
\ndifference between Pancasila and other ideologies, and between
\nthe Indonesian Armed Forces and other countries' armed forces.
\nLearning the nation's history will also solidify their identities
\nas Indonesian citizens.<\/p>\n
