BYD is reportedly set to launch a new plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV), suspected to be the M6 DM-i model, in Indonesia in mid-May 2026, with an estimated price range of Rp 320 million to Rp 380 million. This model combines a petrol engine with electric power for improved fuel efficiency and flexibility, addressing uncertainties in fuel prices in the Indonesian market. The introduction could position it as one of the more affordable PHEV MPVs available, enhancing BYD's presence in the growing electric and hybrid vehicle segment.

JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com – BYD is reportedly set to launch a new car
featuring plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) technology in Indonesia
in mid-May 2026.

The vehicle is strongly suspected to be the BYD M6 DM-i version,
which has previously been captured on camera undergoing road tests in
Indonesia under camouflage.

Information regarding the launch schedule and estimated price of the
car has also begun circulating from BYD sales staff.

“The launch is on the 18th (May 2026). The estimated price range is
Rp 320 million to Rp 380 million. For pre-booking, just Rp 5 million
initially,” said one BYD sales staff member to Kompas.com on Monday
(11/5/2026).

Moreover, some time ago, the car suspected to be the BYD M6 PHEV was
captured on camera during road tests in Indonesia, and the photos have
widely circulated on social media.

In terms of appearance, the design of the vehicle is very similar to
the BYD M6 electric model already marketed in Indonesia.

However, there are slight differences at the front, particularly in
the grille area, which is characteristic of petrol or hybrid engine
vehicles.

Globally, BYD indeed possesses DM-i (Dual Mode Intelligent)
technology that combines a petrol engine with an electric motor.

This system allows the car to run on electric power, while still
supported by the petrol engine as an additional power source and battery
charger.

BYD’s plug-in hybrid technology is said to offer better fuel
efficiency compared to conventional petrol cars, yet remains flexible
for long-distance travel.

Signals of the presence of this technology in Indonesia were
previously given directly by BYD Indonesia. This was evident from a post
on the official Instagram account of BYD Indonesia, which briefly
explained the workings of BYD Dual Mode technology.

Head of Public and Government Relations at PT BYD Motor Indonesia,
Luther Panjaitan, also confirmed that the company will soon launch new
technology in the Indonesian market.

“We will launch new technology with efficiency levels far above
conventional petrol cars and performance equivalent to EVs, plus higher
flexibility,” said Luther.

According to him, this technology is also considered suitable for the
current Indonesian automotive market conditions, especially amid
uncertainties in fuel prices.

If the BYD M6 DM-i indeed launches at a starting price of Rp 320
million, this car has the potential to become one of the more affordable
PHEV MPVs in Indonesia.
",
