Leaders must introspect<\/p>\n

Day by day I become increasingly confused by Indonesia's
\nsituation. I feel even more confused when I read news items in
\nthe media -- printed or electronic. In addition I have to
\nstruggle for survival.<\/p>\n
There are many people who call themselves leaders and talk and
\nact in the name of people and religion. But their actions, as I
\nobserve them, are far from legitimate, violating religious,
\nsocial as well as cultural values.<\/p>\n
Many of them are mere self-proclaimed heroes, blame and
\nhumiliate each other, and speak as they wish as if they alone are
\nright. Therefore, as a truthful citizen, I would like to bring
\nthe following matters to their attention.<\/p>\n
* The political parties that are not eligible to take part in
\nthe general election should not feel disappointed but instead
\nshould utilize their resources and means to do other worthy
\nthings, such as dealing with the hungry and the needy. Setting up
\na party is no guarantee of an easy solution to our problems. Who
\nbecomes leader of the nation does not matter as long as he is on
\nthe right track. On the other hand, eligible parties must
\nparticipate in the election in a lawful and just manner. Promote
\nyour programs which will give the greatest advantage to the
\npeople and don't demean other parties.<\/p>\n
* Media news reports -- on TV and in newspapers -- are often
\nconfusing. I usually watch the news on TV programs that feature
\nopen discussions with scholars and well-known figures. But they
\nonly talk and talk, make predictions, and speak ill of other
\npeople. Is that what intelligent people are supposed to do?
\nThey'd better keep this in mind: people are already sickened by
\npromises and empty words. They want facts and reality!<\/p>\n
* The government (disregarding its legitimacy) should uphold
\nthe truth, justice and transparency. And the Armed Forces (which
\nis now widely under fire) should seriously maintain stability and
\ntake stern measures against disorderly elements. What the people
\nneed badly are peace and security.<\/p>\n
To fellow citizens I would like to appeal as follows: We
\nshould come forward, together under the basis of equal footing,
\nuphold the principle of equality in every respect. Don't let
\ndifferences lead us to disintegration. Instead, let's make them
\nour unshakeable binding force because we cannot afford to
\nsacrifice unity.<\/p>\n
