Some party leaders have reacted in panic to results of the
\n2004 legislative election by initiating a 19-party coalition
\nagainst the vote gains, despite a subsequent correction of this
\nstatement by the relevant political parties.<\/p>\n
Now we are witnessing a debate on the formation of a "national
\nsalvation axis", which, according to National Mandate Party
\nleader Amien Rais, is aimed at preventing the revival of old
\npower.<\/p>\n
However, Amien Rais denied the claim that the axis he proposed
\nwas designed to prevent the rise of Megawati Soekarnoputri to the
\npresidency, as in the case of his "central axis" in 1999.<\/p>\n
Whatever members of the political elite may be doing, people
\nwill perceive it as theater, with the likelihood of the audience
\neither applauding or booing the actors off the stage.<\/p>\n
It seems that in the 2004 general election, with such
\npoliticians strutting about on stage, people will not applaud
\nbecause the players are not guided by their consciences. What
\nthey need to do is simply listen to their consciences.<\/p>\n
