Lawyers rush to back Hafidz<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Lawyers are preparing a defense for Wardah
\nHafidz, the coordinator of the Urban Poor Consortium (UPC) who
\ncould face legal action brought by a political party she accused
\nof misusing social safety net funds.<\/p>\n
Hendardi, who will coordinate the defense team, said in a
\nstatement that lawyers from three non-governmental organizations
\nand a human rights organization would work on the case.<\/p>\n
"The team was set up to defend Hafidz in the event of any
\nlegal action brought by People's Sovereignty Party chairman
\nLatief Burhan," he said.<\/p>\n
Hendardi explained that Hafidz's investigation into misuse of
\nsocial safety net funds should receive support from the public.
\n"His investigation should be seen as a significant effort by a
\nmember of the public to take action against serious malpractice,"
\nhe said.<\/p>\n
He said the party's plan to report Hafidz to the police
\ncontradicted its election manifesto, which promotes the interests
\nof common people.<\/p>\n
If the party wanted to put its rhetoric into practice then it
\nwould have to be prepared to accept censure from the public, he
\nadded.<\/p>\n
Hendardi also said the legal team had urged the authorities to
\nmake use of Hafidz's findings in a full investigation of the
