Lawyers demand police apology<\/p>\n
YOGYAKARTA: Fourteen senior lawyers are demanding police chief
\nLt. Gen. Dibyo Widodo apologize to them for a remark they
\nconsider slanderous.<\/p>\n
They are angry because Dibyo told the House of Representatives
\nthat they foiled the Dec. 9 reconstruction of journalist Fuad
\nMuhammad Syafruddin's murder.<\/p>\n
The lawyers say the allegation is baseless.<\/p>\n
\"We want the police chief to apologize because he has hurt our
\ndignity,\" they said. Lawyer Herman Abdurrahman demanded Dibyo
\nresign.<\/p>\n
The reconstruction flopped when Dwi Sumaji, the man the police
\naccuse of killing the reporter in August, became frantic and
\nrefused to re-enact the murder. Marsiyem, the journalist's wife
\nand the only eyewitness in the murder, was sick and unable to
\nattend.<\/p>\n
Critics say the police knowingly arrested the wrong man to
\ncover up what actually happened. They believe the murder involved
\nkey local government officials angered at the journalists'
