Lawyers clash in Anwar trial<\/p>\n
KUALA LUMPUR (AP): Defense and prosecution lawyers in the
\nAnwar Ibrahim sodomy trial clashed on Tuesday about whether a
\nsurgeon should be allowed to testify about an anal operation he
\nperformed on Anwar's adopted brother.<\/p>\n
Anwar, 52, who is serving a six-year jail term for corruption,
\nis on trial for allegedly sodomizing his former family driver,
\nAzizan Abdul Bakar. Anwar's adopted brother, Sukma Dermawan, is
\ncharged with assisting in the homosexual act which prosecutors
\nsay occurred sometime between January to March in 1993.<\/p>\n
Prosecutors hope to prove that there was a pattern of
\nhomosexual acts by Sukma and Anwar. They called on a respected
\nKuala Lumpur doctor, Abel Armugam, to the witness stand to
\ndescribe his examination of Sukma and a subsequent operation of
\nthe rectum.<\/p>\n
When he began to testify that Sukma suffered from hemorrhoids,
\nthe defense lawyers protested loudly.<\/p>",
