Lawyer awaits Ciracas dossier<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The defense lawyer of the main suspect in the
\nmurder of a woman and her three children in Bambu Apus, East
\nJakarta, said yesterday he had not yet received any dossier on
\nthe case.<\/p>\n
"Up to the present time, I have not received any dossier
\nbecause the suspect hasn't confessed to anything about his
\nalleged involvement in the murder," O.C. Kaligis told The Jakarta
\nPost yesterday.<\/p>\n
Kaligis is to defend Filipus Kia in court for his alleged
\ninvolvement in the murder of the 31-year-old wife and three young
\nchildren of school teacher Rohadi.<\/p>\n
According to police the murder was provoked by a quarrel
\nbetween Filipus and Rohadi's family over cassava plants
\ncultivated in front of the victim's house.<\/p>\n
Filipus, along with his son and two of his nephews, are now in
\npolice custody on charges of involvement in the case.<\/p>\n
Filipus' wife Parmi and their other son will be called as
\nwitnesses.<\/p>\n
By law, police are obliged to assign defense lawyers to
\nsuspects charged with committing a crime that carries death the
\npenalty or more than 15 years imprisonment if they cannot afford
\nto hire one.<\/p>\n
"Since I have been retained by Filipus as his lawyer, I should
\nbe doing my job," Kaligis said.<\/p>\n
He said that formal investigations had not yet started. The
\npolice had merely invited a psychiatrist to investigate the
\nsuspect's psychological condition.<\/p>\n
The murder, which took place early last week, has caused
\npublic anger. Soon after the police announced the arrest over the
\nweekend of the suspects, who are neighbors of the victims, local
\nresidents partially destroyed the Filipus' house and houses
\nbelonging to the his relatives.<\/p>\n
"I have a problem now since the mob have unlawfully punished
\nmy client," Kaligis said. "I myself have neither received any
\nofficial report on the suspects nor the testimony of the
\nwitnesses."<\/p>\n
As stipulated by law, people should uphold the principle of
\npresumption of innocence, he said.<\/p>\n
Kaligis said one crime should not responded to with another
\ncrime. The partial burning down of the houses of the suspects'
\nrelatives "just does not make sense," he added. (03)<\/p>",
