Lawsuit against Freeport dismissed<\/p>\n
JAKARTA: PT Freeport Indonesia and Freeport-McMoRan Copper &
\nGold Inc. (FCX) have welcomed a recent decision by the U.S.
\nDistrict Court in New Orleans, Louisiana, to dismiss with
\nfinality a third amended lawsuit against the companies.<\/p>\n
The lawsuit was filed by U.S. attorney Martin E. Regan, Jr. on
\nbehalf of Tom Beanal, a leader of the Amungme tribe of Irian
\nJaya.<\/p>\n
\"We sincerely hope that we can now begin a new chapter in our
\nrelations with the Amungmes and work together with them and with
\nall concerned parties on the important but difficult process of
\nmanaging social change and development in Irian Jaya,\" said
\nGarland Robinette, FCX vice president of communications, in a
\nstatement on Thursday.<\/p>\n
He expressed hope that the lawsuit dismissal would result in
\nimproved communications with the Amungme people.<\/p>\n
The original lawsuit against Freeport was filed in April 1996
\nand was dismissed by the Federal Court on three previous
\noccasions.<\/p>\n
Freeport is engaged in mineral exploration and development,
\nand mining and milling of copper, gold and silver in Irian Jaya's
\nTimika regency.<\/p>",
