Lawmaker supports death penalty<\/p>\n
SURAKARTA, Central Java: A legislator threw his weight on
\nMonday behind an idea to impose the death penalty for corruption
\nconvicts, saying the crime was as extraordinary as acts of
\nterrorism.<\/p>\n
Deputy House of Representatives Speaker Zaenal Ma'arif said
\nthe death sentence would be effective to deter people from
\ncommitting embezzlement, which has been rampant in the country.<\/p>\n
Under the prevailing anticorruption law, a convict faces a
\nmaximum life sentence, which Zaenal said had failed to stop
\ncorruption.<\/p>\n
\"Even a defendant who is found guilty of stealing Rp 10
\nbillion in state money deserves the death penalty. We are not
\ntalking about the amount of state losses, but an effective
\ndeterrent,\" Zaenal said on the sidelines of a congress organized
\nby Reform Star Party members who challenge the leadership of
\nchairman Zainuddin MZ.<\/p>\n
On Sunday, People's Consultative Assembly Speaker Hidayat Nur
\nWahid called for the death sentence for convicted state money
