        "content": "<p>Law reform needed to protect women<\/p>\n<p>YOGYAKARTA (JP): Activists are again calling for the<br>\nreevaluation of laws and regulations which discriminate against<br>\nwomen.<\/p>\n<p>Nursyahbani Katjasungkana, chief of the Association of<br>\nIndonesian Woman for Justice, said that many of Indonesia's laws<br>\nreflected patriarchal values that subordinated women to men.<\/p>\n<p>\"The Law on Marriage, for example, stipulates that the husband<br>\nis the head of the family and the wife is the housekeeper,\"<br>\nNursyahbani said at a seminar, Legal Empowerment for Women, on<br>\nFriday.<\/p>\n<p>The outspoken activist said that many laws should be amended<br>\nto respond to women's needs and rights.<\/p>\n<p>According to Nursyahbani, women activists are working harder<br>\nto advocate for women, to disseminate women's rights and to raise<br>\npublic awareness on women's rights and issues.<\/p>\n<p>\"It is crucial for women to know their rights in order to<br>\nempower virtually every aspect of their lives,\" Nursyahbani said.<\/p>\n<p>Legal empowerment is expected to raise women's assertiveness<br>\nto question and reconsider their position in society in relation<br>\nto men.<\/p>\n<p>Budi Santoso of the Yogyakarta Legal Aid Institute agreed with<br>\nthe need for a campaign to increase women's awareness of their<br>\nrights, but added that women must fight even harder to obtain<br>\nmaximum legal protection.<\/p>\n<p>Budi suggested that laws should be reformed to ensure equal<br>\nrights, thereby eradicating discrimination against women. And<br>\nlaws should be changed to impose severe penalties on those who<br>\nare violent to women.<\/p>\n<p>He said that the criminal code may need reevaluation and<br>\nreform to make it more effective in dealing with the growing<br>\nnumber of sexual assaults against women.<\/p>\n<p>Chapter 285 of the Code of Criminal Conduct specifies that the<br>\nmaximum prison sentence for sexual assault is 12 years.
