Law on biodiversity needed<\/p>\n
JAKARTA: A legislation on biodiversity is urgently needed to
\nprevent genetically modified agricultural products from entering
\nIndonesia unchecked, an official said.<\/p>\n
"We have to be cautious of imported genetically modified
\nagricultural products. We don't want them to destroy our
\nbiodiversity," Deputy State Minister for the Environment Liana
\nBratasida said on Thursday.<\/p>\n
She said that, as biotechnology activities were on the rise,
\nregulations were needed to control them so as to protect the
\nenvironment.<\/p>\n
The office of the state minister for the environment is
\ncurrently preparing a bill on genetic resources, which is needed
\nto protect patented Indonesian biodiversity.<\/p>\n
"Foreigners often take and use our biodiversity for their own
\ninterests. They patent them and sell them at our expense," she
