Law can be bought<\/p>\n

Upholding the supremacy of law in Indonesia is virtually
\nimpossible at present. Various cases have shown that the
\ncountry's judiciary yields to bribery and death threats. Very
\nrecently, the Supreme Court judges conducted the judicial review
\nof the case of Tommy Soeharto, who was handed down a sentence of
\n18 months in jail.<\/p>\n
We cannot blame Taufik, German and Soeharto, the three members
\nof the panel of Supreme Court judges passing the ruling as they
\nare only a small part of the legal system that has degenerated
\nover the decades.<\/p>\n
The government also faces a dilemma as some people in
\nMegawati's Cabinet have not upheld the law. They are Soeharto's
\nunderlings who have managed to remain in the administration, the
\nfruit of the hard work of some cadres of the functional group
\n(Golkar) that still have power.<\/p>\n
All of us who still hope that the legal system in this country
\ncan still be improved should take heart and know that nothing
\nmore can be done to improve our poor legal system.<\/p>\n
Over the years, we have adopted the legal system from the
\nDutch colonial administration and some other laws from western
\ncountries, which could actually be effective to solve cases if
\nthey were properly implemented.<\/p>\n
