Latest Poso attack 'purely criminal'<\/p>\n
PALU, Central Sulawesi: The recent attack on teenager Tofan
\nSonpa in Poso Pesisir district here had nothing to do with
\nprevious incidents allegedly linked to religious sentiment,
\npolice said on Monday.<\/p>\n
\"This case is strongly believed to be purely a crime and the
\ncause was a dispute over water (for irrigation),\" Poso Police
\nchief Adj. Sr. Comr. Rudy Sufahriadi said.<\/p>\n
Tofan was stabbed by an unidentified person wearing black
\nattire on his way home from his farm in Sa'atu village on Friday.
\nHe is in hospital with serious wounds.<\/p>\n
Rudy said that based on statements from witnesses, including
\nTofan's father Marthen Sonpa, residents of Sa'atu had become
\nangry after irrigation for their farmlands was being impeded.
\nThey blamed Tofan for this.<\/p>\n
\"So, the problem may have been triggered by water distribution
\nproblems to their farm areas,\" Rudy added.<\/p>\n
Earlier, sporadic attacks hit Poso, a tiny regency wracked by
\ntwo years of sectarian fighting that ended in 2001 following a
\npeace deal between local Muslim and Christian leaders.<\/p>\n
Last month, unknown killers beheaded three Christian girls in
