Indonesia plans to increase LPG imports from the United States to 70% of total supply, up from the current 57%, as part of a bilateral trade agreement, according to Pertamina's Chief Executive Simon Aloysius Mantiri. The US$15 billion energy import initiative aims to diversify supply sources and secure competitive pricing whilst addressing Indonesia's natural production decline in upstream oil and gas. Current retail LPG prices remain stable, with subsidised 3 kg cylinders at Rp19,000 and non-subsidised 5.5 kg and 12 kg cylinders ranging from Rp90,000 to Rp249,000 depending on region.

Indonesia plans to increase the proportion of Liquefied Petroleum Gas
(LPG) imports from the United States to 70 per cent. This follows
through on a trade agreement between Indonesia and the United
States.

Pertamina Chief Executive Simon Aloysius Mantiri explained that this
step forms part of a strategy to diversify energy sources to secure
supply whilst obtaining competitive pricing. Before the new agreement,
dependence on LPG supply from the US was already dominant.

“And we know that Pertamina has been importing a considerable
proportion of LPG from the United States, approximately 57 per cent.
Well, with this trade agreement, we will certainly be able to increase
it to 70 per cent,” said Simon during an online press conference from
the United States, quoted Tuesday (3 March 2026).

Simon stressed that the implementation of energy imports valued at
US$15 billion would proceed on business-as-usual principles and with
transparency. The company guarantees there will be no direct appointment
mechanism, but rather the normal open tender process for qualified
partners in the US.

“The plan for energy imports from the United States includes, first,
the technical approach we are implementing is business as usual. So
there is no direct appointment but rather, as usual, an open mechanism
of tender and bidding,” he asserted.

Simon acknowledged that Indonesia currently faces the challenge of
natural decline in upstream oil and gas production, so imports are
necessary to bridge the gap between domestic production and consumption
whilst awaiting improvements in production capacity to bear fruit.

“We are also continuing efforts to increase our production lift. As
we know, we are experiencing natural decline and certainly need
breakthroughs. To meet the current gap, we still need imports,” he
added.

So what are the latest LPG prices at agents and filling stations?

Based on CNBC Indonesia’s monitoring, in the South Tangerang region,
as of March 2026, the highest retail price for 3 kg LPG remains at
Rp19,000 per cylinder.
