Last three Panwaslu members elected<\/p>\n

One scholar, one women's activist and one cleric have been chosen
\nto fill the last three seats in the nine-member Election
\nSupervisory Committee (Panwaslu).<\/p>\n
General Elections Commission (KPU) member Hamid Awaluddin
\nannounced on Friday that Muslim scholar Komaruddin Hidayat, noted
\nMuslim women's activist Noordjannah Djohantini and Protestant
\nMinister Saut Hamonangan Sirait had passed screening conducted by
\nthe commission last Thursday.<\/p>\n
\"They are the most qualified persons to fill the remaining
\nthree seats. As you know, we only got three people from the
\nprevious screening,\" Hamid said.<\/p>\n
KPU, which is tasked with selecting Panwaslu members,
\nhandpicked nine people as candidates for Panwaslu member last
\nweek after the commission failed to find qualified candidates in
\nthe first round of screening.<\/p>\n
More than 200 people applied for Panwaslu membership last
\nmonth, from which KPU selected 22 to contest six seats on the
\nnine-member committee, but only three were judged qualified,
\nprompting KPU to choose more candidates. Three other seats have
\nbeen filled by two police representatives and one Attorney
\nGeneral's Office representative.<\/p>\n
Hamid said the last three elected members were all independent
\nand had a good understanding of democracy, political parties and
\ngeneral elections.<\/p>\n
He also said there was one candidate that the KPU deemed
\nideal, but the person could not work full-time as a Panwaslu
\nmember. He refused identify the person.<\/p>\n
Panwaslu is an independent body that will monitor the 2004
\nlegislative elections, including ballot counting.<\/p>\n
It consists of six elected members and three appointed members
\n-- two from the National Police and one from the Attorney
\nGeneral's Office.<\/p>\n
KPU choose three people to be Panwaslu members from last
\nmonth's screening. The three were Didik Supriyanto, Rozy Munir
\nand Topo Santoso representing the press, public figures and
\ninstitutes of higher learning respectively.<\/p>\n
Hamid went on to say that Panwaslu members would convene on
\nTuesday to start their jobs.<\/p>\n
\"Temporarily, Panwaslu will hold their meetings at the KPU
\noffice,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Indonesia will hold its first direct elections next year,
\nstarting with the legislative elections on April 5.<\/p>\n
The two-phased presidential election will follow between June
\nand August 2004.<\/p>\n
