Laser discs must be censored<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The city information office announced yesterday
\nthat all laser discs in circulation in the city have to pass
\ncensorship from the Film Censorship Institution no later than April
\nnext year.<\/p>\n
Semyon Sinulingga, head of the office, said yesterday that laser
\ndiscs, which have not had censorship labels from the institution
\nattached, are considered illegal.<\/p>\n
\"This is the implementation of Decree No. 215\/1994 issued by the
\nMinistry of Information last month,\" Semyon told reporters.<\/p>\n
The issuance of the decree is intended to end the decade-old
\ncontroversy over the legality of the circulation of laser discs in
\nIndonesia.<\/p>\n
He explained that there will be only two categories for
\ncensorship: fully accepted and rejected.<\/p>\n
Laser discs were previously banned under the Ministry of
\nInformation Regulation No. 20\/1983, which was issued following
\nreports of illegal door-to-door distribution of smuggled laser discs.
\nThis regulation was not fully enforced, thereby enabling the open
\nsale and distribution of discs.<\/p>\n
Semyon said there have not been any discs registered or
\nconfiscated since the decree was issued on November.<\/p>\n
Semyon said the government has also given authority to the
\nassociation of video entertainment importers to coordinate the
\nregistration of discs.<\/p>\n
The association is obliged to pay an administration fee of Rp
\n25,000 (US$11.42) for every disc checked by the institution while the
\nowner has to pay only Rp 5,000 for the sticker. (yns)<\/p>",
