        "content": "<p>Banda Aceh (ANTARA) - The Language Development and Cultivation Agency\n(Badan Bahasa) of the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education is\nurging the public to preserve regional languages to prevent their\nextinction.<\/p>\n<p>The Head of the Language Agency of the Ministry of Basic and\nSecondary Education, Hafidz Muksin, in Banda Aceh on Tuesday, stated\nthat the extinction of regional languages could occur as the number of\nspeakers among the younger generation decreases.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRegional languages are a cultural treasure that must be continuously\npreserved. If not preserved, the extinction of regional languages could\nindeed happen. Therefore, we are calling on the public to preserve\nregional languages,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Hafidz Muksin stated that regional languages play an important role\nfor the Indonesian language. This is because regional languages also\nenrich the vocabulary of Indonesian.<\/p>\n<p>Currently, he said, there are 728 regional languages. The province\nwith the most regional languages is Papua, with 400 regional languages.\nTo date, five regional languages have been recorded as extinct.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, threats to regional languages are also caused by the\nyounger generation being embarrassed to speak or use their mother\ntongue.
