        "content": "<p>Semarang (ANTARA) - Head of the Language Development and Fostering\nAgency (Badan Bahasa), Hafidz Muksin, has stated that literacy does not\nsimply mean being able to read, but also involves the capacity to\nunderstand. \u201cHow we read something, we must comprehend the meaning of\nwhat is read. It fosters our critical and creative faculties to\nunderstand and to act,\u201d he said in Ungaran, Semarang Regency, on\nWednesday. He made these remarks during the 2026 International\nConference of the Association of Indonesian Language and Literature\nLecturers (Adobsi), themed \u201cThe Transformation of Indonesian Language\nand Literature in Education and Technology: An Interdisciplinary\nPerspective\u201d, held at the Central Java Language Office in Semarang\nRegency. He further explained that literacy also concerns the ability to\ncritique or verify the truth of what is read, citing the example of a\nsign prohibiting littering. Literally, he said, people might be able to\nread the prohibition, but many merely read it and continue to litter in\nthat very spot. \u201cSo there is the processing of reading, processing of\nthought, and processing of action. Once that is truly understood by\neveryone, it will definitely reflect that our society possesses a high\nlevel of literacy,\u201d he said. To improve public literacy, Muksin said his\nagency requires cooperation with various parties, including Adobsi,\nwhich is responsible for educating future Indonesian language teachers.\n\u201cAdobsi certainly has a very strategic role in equipping prospective\nteachers. Essentially, teachers who instruct at high school, junior\nhigh, and primary school levels come from universities, particularly\nIndonesian language teachers,\u201d he said. Meanwhile, Adobsi Chairperson\nDr.\u00a0Wati Istanti explained that the conference aims to enhance the\nquality of education for prospective Indonesian language and literature\nteachers. \u201cOur task is to educate and teach Indonesian to university\nstudents who will eventually become teachers,\u201d she said. She added that\nthis relates to Indonesian language proficiency across three crucial\naspects: knowledge, skills, and attitudes, which will be passed on to\nstudents who are future educators. Several overseas speakers were also\ninvited to the event, including representatives from Yale University in\nthe US, the University of Melbourne in Australia, and the University of\nSocial Sciences and Humanities in Vietnam. She noted that Indonesian\nlanguage learning takes place at these universities, particularly in\nVietnam where Indonesian has become akin to a second language. \u201cOur hope\nis that we can also gain good practices in teaching Indonesian in\ncountries where the language is no longer regarded as foreign but as a\nsecond language,\u201d she said.<\/p>",
