Landslides, floods wreak havoc in Central Java<\/p>\n
PURWOREJO, Central Java (JP): Landslides and floods which had
\nstruck Purworejo, Purbalingga and Kebumen regencies following two
\ndays of torrential rains, have killed at least 21 residents and
\ndamaged dozens of houses, an official reported on Sunday.<\/p>\n
Nineteen of the 21 fatalities were in Purworejo and two in
\nKebumen. There were no reports of fatalities in Purbalingga.<\/p>\n
Local authorities and residents were still looking for more
\nbodies of residents who had been missing since the disaster which
\nleft several areas in southern Central Java inundated, occurred
\non Saturday.<\/p>\n
In Purworejo, Kemanukan village chief Sutarna said on Sunday
\nthat six Kemanukan villagers in Bagelan district had been buried
\nalive by the landslide.<\/p>\n
\"We have recovered six bodies that had been buried in the
\nmud,\" he said, while identifying the six as Karsini, Hadi Waluyo,
\nTugino, Kesi, Agus and Riswanto.<\/p>\n
\"We are still searching for the remains of two other residents
\nwhom we believe are also buried in the mud,\" he said.<\/p>\n
An officer with the Purworejo Police subprecinct Sgt. Maj.
\nThohir told The Jakarta Post that landslides had buried 12
\nresidents of Pasekelan and Pelipir villages in Purworejo and
\ninjured nine others while five residents were still missing.<\/p>\n
Later on the same day, residents found the body of an
\nelementary school student, Kus Aminah from Delanggu village in
\nButuh district, Purworejo. Kus went missing after being swept
\naway by strong water currents, Antara reported. The village was
\nhardest hit by floods in Purworejo.<\/p>\n
A search and rescue team has been sent to the location and is
\nstill looking for more bodies. Local authorities have yet to make
\nany estimation on the number of fatalities or material losses.<\/p>\n
The landslide, which occurred in the early hours of Sunday,
\ncovered at least 10 houses, damaged scores of others and
\ndestroyed crops.<\/p>\n
Residents said they only heard rumbling sounds from a hill in
\nKarangrejo area before the landslide engulfed the village which
\nis located at the foot of the hill.<\/p>\n
Floods also engulfed three districts in Purbalingga. No
\nfatalities were reported, but the one-meter high floodwater had
\ninundated six villages in Kemangkon district, forcing residents
\nto move to higher locations.<\/p>\n
While in Kebumen, Regent Rustriningsih instructed local
\nofficials to set up several emergency posts at the regency,
\ndistrict and village levels with round-the-clock public kitchens
\nin flood-prone areas.<\/p>\n
Floods and a landslide also struck seven districts in Kebumen
\nregency. Two lives were lost when the one-meter high floodwater
\ninundated the area while the landslide demolished dozens of
\nhouses.<\/p>\n
Adimulyo district was the hardest hit area in Kebumen where
\nfloodwaters, recorded as 1.7 meters high, inundated its 23
\nvillages, forcing residents to abandon their houses.<\/p>\n
Security authorities, backed by local residents are continuing
\ntheir rescue efforts to find missing residents. (har\/lup)<\/p>",
