Landslide kills seven in Kebumen<\/p>\n

Nine people were buried in a landslide which took place in
\nPenusupan village, Sruweng district in the regency of Kebumen,
\nCentral Java, on Thursday night. Seven of the nine people were
\nfound dead under three meters of soil on Friday while the
\nremaining two have yet to be found. It is feared they are also
\ndead.<\/p>\n
The landslide, which occurred following torrential rain, also
\ninjured three people and buried four houses.<\/p>\n
The three, identified as Daniyati, 50, Rohani, 50, and
\nNurhasanah, 22, are being treated at Kebumen Muhammadiyah
\nHospital.<\/p>\n
Penusupan village is located in the northwest of the town of
\nKebumen, about six kilometers north of the Kebumen-Gombong
\nhighway.<\/p>\n
The accident site is at the foot of the 200-meter Mount
\nKembang Abang.<\/p>\n
The heavy downpour also caused flooding in Karangtengah
\nvillage in the subdistrict of Tambak, Banyumas regency.<\/p>\n
At least 500 houses were submerged, with the water level
\nreaching an average of one meter. No fatalities were reported in
\nthe flood.<\/p>\n
\"I saw a huge amount of soil sliding (down the slope) and
\nwitnessed the houses around mine being buried by stones and mud.
\nFrom my window I saw Sayuti screaming for help when his house
\nstarted to collapse in the mud. I was startled and could do
\nnothing,\" said Kastoyo, head of Sidoarum neighborhood community,
\nreferring to a neighbor whose house was engulfed by the
\nlandslide.<\/p>\n
Kastoyo's house was spared.<\/p>\n
The head of Penusupan village, Sudjono, said that he also
\nwitnessed what happened.<\/p>\n
\"Things happened very fast. People whose houses were struck by
\nthe landslide had no time to save themselves. Seconds after the
\nfour houses were totally destroyed villagers began rescue work.
\nIt was very dark. We could only save our neighbor Kasidun,\" he
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
Kebumen Regent Rustriningsih visited the accident site and
\nwitnessed the search for poeple.<\/p>\n
\"We are finding it difficult to search for the bodies as the
\npile of soil is between four and five meters in height, and we
\ndon't have adequate equipment,\" Khoeruddin, an employee of the
\nSruweng district head's office, said.<\/p>",
