        "content": "<p>Landslide kills nine in West Kalimantan<\/p>\n<p>The Jakarta Post<br>\nJakarta<\/p>\n<p>Nine people died in a landslide in Panireman village, Pontianak, <br>\nWest Kalimantan on Friday following a day of heavy rain in the <br>\narea.<\/p>\n<p>The nine fatalities were among at least 12 people who were <br>\nburied when a small hill suddenly collapsed and almost buried the <br>\nsmall village.<\/p>\n<p>A rescue team managed to dig out three people from the debris, <br>\nwhile on Saturday, police and local authorities continued the <br>\nsearch for another missing person.<\/p>\n<p>West Kalimantan Police chief Brig. Gen. Iwan Pandjiwanta told <br>\nreporters at the scene on Saturday, around 40 kilometers from <br>\nPontianak, that two of the nine fatalities were children.<\/p>\n<p>West Kalimantan Police spokesman Comr. Suhadi, meanwhile, <br>\ndisclosed the names of the dead victims as Mat Tohir, 25; <br>\nMarhasih, 19; Marnadi, 5; Ani, 3; Mudin, 25; Faisal, 25 and his <br>\nwife (whose name is unknown), and another two unidentified <br>\nvictims.<\/p>\n<p>He said the search would continue for the next couple of days, <br>\nwhile the rest of the villagers were told to be on alert in case <br>\nof more landslides.<\/p>\n<p>A witness said that the landslide hit seven houses in the <br>\nvillage at around 3 p.m. after heavy rain.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;The survivors were dug out from debris at least one-meter <br>\ndeep. We took them to the community health center and then <br>\nfinally transferred them to the local hospital,&quot; a witness, <br>\nAhmad, was quoted by Antara as saying.<\/p>\n<p>The survivors are currently undergoing treatment at Soedarso <br>\nhospital.<\/p>\n<p>Late last year in Lampung, a similar disaster killed at least <br>\n11 people.<\/p>\n<p>The Meteorology and Geophysics Agency (BMG) has predicted that <br>\nthe rainy season would reach its peak in January and February, <br>\nwith the possibility of huge floods hitting several areas in the <br>\ncountry.<\/p>\n<p>Only last year, the country saw the biggest flood to date that <br>\nparalyzed several major cities in the country, including the <br>\ncapital of Jakarta.<\/p>\n<p>And in December, a popular tourist destination Pacet hot <br>\nsprings in Central Java made the headlines when a mudslide buried <br>\na crowded resort, killing over 30 people.<\/p>",
