Landslide kills mother, children in West Java<\/p>\n

A mother and her three children were buried alive on Sunday
\nevening after a landslide destroyed their home along with three
\nother houses in Wanahayu village, Majalengka regency, about 50
\nkilometers south of Cirebon, West Java.<\/p>\n
Lilis Saefudin, 32, along with her eldest daughter Fitri, and
\nsons Aji and Fikrie, were immediately killed when a portion of
\nthe hill behind their house turned into a river of mud during
\nheavy rains. Local police, Indonesian Military (TNI) personnel
\nand local residents could not do much to save the victims, as the
\nlandslide occurred in the evening during a blackout.<\/p>\n
Lilis' husband, Empud Saefudin, suffered only slight injuries
\nbecause he was not in the house when the disaster occurred.<\/p>\n
\"I was repairing the water channel to my fish pond. I was
\ntrapped in the mud, but my neighbors rescued me after I called
\nfor help,\" he told The Jakarta Post.<\/p>\n
Majalengka Regent Tuti Hayati Anwar ordered the evacuation of
\n70 Wanahayu families, while she cautioned another 825 families to
\nprepare for the worst, as the rainy season will last another
\ncouple of months.<\/p>\n
Another landslide also occurred in nearby Citondo village and
\ndamaged five houses, but no fatalities were reported.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile Ahmad Djumarma, head of the West Java Volcanology
\nand Geological Disaster Management, said his office had listed
\nthe two villages in Majalengka regency as landslide-prone. Local
\nresidents had also been advised to stay alert during the rainy
\nseason.<\/p>\n
\"Landslides have hit the area several times already, and the
\narea is classified as 'yellow' for high alert against
\nlandslides,\" said Ahmad.<\/p>",
