        "content": "<p>Landslide in Kutai kills nine<\/p>\n<p>JAKARTA (JP): Nine people died and three more were injured in<br>\na landslide at a traditional gold mine near the Babi River in<br>\nLong Iram district, Kutai, East Kalimantan, on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>Rescue workers continued their search on Wednesday for 30<br>\npeople who are still missing.<\/p>\n<p>\"The rescue team is still working at the site and I haven't<br>\nreceived further details about the victims,\" Kutai Police chief<br>\nLt. Col. Abdul Madjid R. said during a live interview with SCTV<br>\ntelevision station on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>Witnesses said about 40 people were working in the mine when<br>\nthe landslide struck.<\/p>\n<p>Abdul said the mud walls of the mine collapsed due to the<br>\nunstable ground.<\/p>\n<p>\"We had difficulty reaching the site because the road was<br>\nsmall, slippery and muddy,\" he said, adding that he also had<br>\ndifficulty communicating with rescue workers.<\/p>\n<p>Antara quoted Abdul as saying that a team of police from the<br>\nnearby city of Tenggarong had been dispatched to assist the<br>\nrescue workers.<\/p>\n<p>The police team was expected to arrive at the site on<br>\nWednesday afternoon.<\/p>\n<p>The news agency reported the traditional mine was located next<br>\nto the largest gold mine in the province, owned by PT Kelian<br>\nEquatorial Mining.<\/p>\n<p>The news agency also reported traditional mining had been<br>\nbarred at the site due to its negative impact on the environment.<\/p>\n<p>\"We're only trying to make a living,\" one of the miners, Siti,<br>\nwas quoted as saying by the news agency.
