Landslide destroys 43 houses<\/p>\n
BANJARNEGARA, Central Java: At least 43 houses in the village
\nof Sewidak, Wanayas district, Banjarnegara regency, Central Java,
\nwere totally destroyed by a landslide on Sunday. No fatalities
\nwere reported.<\/p>\n
Deputy regent of Banjarnegara Hadi Supeno said on Monday that
\nhis office was helping the residents evacuate the village for
\ntheir relatives' houses in neighboring villages.<\/p>\n
\"We implore everyone to leave the village, despite the fact
\nthat their houses are still standing,\" Hadi said, adding that
\nfresh landslides could take place at any time.<\/p>\n
He said that the soil around the village was very unstable and
\nprone to landslide.<\/p>\n
Banjarnegara is one of the regencies located in the southern
\npart of Central Java. This area is very prone to natural
\ndisasters, including flood and landslide.<\/p>\n
In the last two months floods and landslides have hit the
\nneighboring regencies of Banyumas, Kebumen and Cilacap. At least
\n13 people have died in the disaster while thousands of houses
\nhave been destroyed, forcing thousands of families to seek
\nrefuge.<\/p>\n
Hadi said that the villagers were very familiar with
\nlandslides, which always occurred in the rainy season. \"But
\nusually less than 10 houses would be destroyed.\"<\/p>\n
He did not explain what action the regency was taking to
\nminimize the villagers' suffering when landslides occurred.<\/p>\n
He said relocation would be the best way to help them. \"But we
\nlack funds. We need a great deal of money for land acquisition
\nand the construction of new houses for the people.\" --JP<\/p>",
