Landing strips to be leased<\/p>\n
BATAM: Air Hongkong, a Hongkong-based airline company, is set to
\nrent landing strips at Hang Nadim Airport in Batam so that its
\npilots can be trained there.<\/p>\n
Dwi Djoko Wiwoho, the spokesman of Batam Industrial
\nDevelopment Authority -- which oversees the running of the
\nairport -- said on Saturday that the agreement to lease the
\nlanding strips had been inked in a memorandum of understanding
\nbetween Batam Industrial Development Authority and Air Hongkong
\non Wednesday last week.<\/p>\n
\"The agreement will take effect on Nov. 8,\" said Djoko, adding
\nthat the contract will last for five years, until 2008.<\/p>\n
Under the contract, Air Hongkong will be allowed to use the
\nlanding strips for training purposes only. The airline will be
\ncharged 25 percent of the fees paid by commercial airplanes each
\ntime a plane lands. The landing fee for commercial planes is
\ncurrently US$1,000.<\/p>\n
Hang Nadim airport, which was built in 1990, boasts the
\nlongest landing strip in Asia.<\/p>\n
Currently, the airport only serves domestic flight for six
\nairlines, namely Garuda Indonesian Airways, Bouraq, Jatayu, Lion,
\nMandala and Merpati Airlines. -- JP<\/p>",
