        "content": "<p>Land reclamation<br>\nin Jakarta<\/p>\n<p>This is to remind Jakarta Governor Sutiyoso, who is going <br>\nahead with the Jakarta reclamation project, that even he knows <br>\nthe environmental impact assessment has elaborated the <br>\nconsequences in detail.<\/p>\n<p>The front page of the March 11 edition of The Jakarta Post <br>\nmentioned the details of the impact and those who rejected the <br>\nplan, including the minister of environment, the director general <br>\noverseeing spatial planning at the Ministry of Resettlement and <br>\nRegional Infrastructure and, of course, some non-governmental <br>\norganizations (NGOs).<\/p>\n<p>Sutiyoso has probably forgotten about last year's floods, the <br>\ncity's worst, with material losses hitting Rp 6 trillion, which <br>\nwould have made it impossible for him to retain his governorship <br>\nwithout the backing of President Megawati Soekarnoputri.<\/p>\n<p>Although he mentioned Singapore and Tokyo as examples, he did <br>\nnot realize that topographically Jakarta is not fit for <br>\nreclamation, as the Pantai Indah Kapuk luxury housing project was <br>\none of the culprits behind last year's flooding.<\/p>\n<p>M.
