Land mapping networking will be improved<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The Ministry of Forestry will use the National
\nAgency for Survey and Mapping Coordination's remote sensing
\nservices to supervise forests and the evaluate reforestation
\nprograms.<\/p>\n
Under an agreement signed Tuesday by the agency's chief, Paul
\nSuharto, and director general of forest inventory and land use
\nplanning, Sumahadi, the ministry and agency will cooperate in the
\noperation of radars to establish an inventory and evaluate forest
\nresources.<\/p>\n
The two government institutions will also cooperate to monitor
\nforest areas in a critical state, establish boundaries and train
\nofficials in forest surveying.<\/p>\n
Suharto said the agreement was an extension of one signed in
\n1984, which included cooperation in evaluating the ecosystem
\nafter bush fires and reforestation programs.<\/p>\n
He said the agency had adopted an integrated digital data base
\nusing the National Geographic Information System.<\/p>\n
Sumadi said the ministry renewed the cooperation with the
\nagency to improve the time efficiency and the management of
\nremote sensing by using the system.<\/p>\n
The remote sensing will use Synthetic Aperture Radar and
\nInterferrometric Synthetic Aperture Radar technology to see
\nthrough clouds and darkness to obtain detailed images of the
\nearth.<\/p>\n
Suharto said the radar had thermal sensor equipment which
\ncould detect heat and map the earth's surface and potential bush
\nfire spots.<\/p>\n
The radar could detect and evaluate the structural changes of
\nsoil, reforestation, forest boundaries and concessionaires'
\nactivities, he said.<\/p>\n
Paul said his agency had done maps for transmigration programs
\nwith an image scale of 1:50,000 and 1:25,000. (10)<\/p>",
