Lampung wight lifters maintain winning run

JAKARTA (JP): Lampung lived up to its billing as the producer
of the country's weight lifting cream in the 14th National Games
yesterday, and Jambi benefited from it.

Shortly after achieving a one-two finish in the men's 59-
kilogram division yesterday, Lampung watched its protege Supeni
win gold for her new province Jambi in the women's 54kg category.

Supeni upset her former Lampung teammate Bastiah with a series
of record-breaking lifts, which included a national record. A
total of two national and five meet records tumbled on the second
day of the weight lifting contest yesterday.

Supeni, winner of the 59kg class gold for Lampung in the last
Games three years ago, heaved 85.5kgs to tear Patmawati's
national snatch mark of 85kgs apart.

The Jambi musclewoman hoisted 100kgs in the clean and jerk for
a total lift of 185kgs. Her three attempts were listed as new
meet records because the division was making its debut in the
Games.

Bastiah totaled 170kgs after snatching 75kgs and clean and
jerking 95kgs. The bronze went to Tati Pratiwi of Central Java
who combined 152.5kgs.

Lampung lifters tallied one more gold and silver from Taufik
and Misdan Yunip respectively, but only after a hard-fought
contest. Both totaled 260kgs, but Taufik was awarded the gold on
account of his lighter body weight. The 22-year-old lifter is
0.6kg lighter than his teammate.

Misdan improved the national 110kgs snatch record by 10.5kgs
on his way to the silver. Taufik made up for his lowly 110kgs in
the snatch with 150kgs in clean and jerk to dash Misdan's hopes
of winning the gold.

Misdan combined an original total lift of 260.5kgs after clean
and jerking 140kgs, but a world weight lifting body ruling
disqualified his 0.5kg extra lift in the snatch. A lifter needs
at least an extra 2.5kgs to set a new snatch record.

On the golf course at Kedaton, Tangerang, North Sumatra
extended its lead by two strokes over its nearest rival West
Java. The Northern Sumatrans, with the country's leading golfer
Sukamdi leading the team, carded a total score of 438 (212 226).
West Java is in second on 440 (214 226).

Four shots further back on 444 (220 224) is the host team,
which, like the other 11 men's teams in the fray, was not able to
break par in the wet conditions which made the par-72 layout very
testing. Overnight heavy drizzle was to blame for the poor
performance of almost all the participants.

Despite carding a 2-over par-74, Sukamdi, who has played the
pivotal role for Indonesia in many international outings,
including the Asian Games, retained his lead in the individual
event. His two-day total of 143 (69 74) leaves him sharing the
lead with East Kalimantan's Bakri (70 73).

Three golfers

Three golfers are tied in second spot on 146. Sukamdi's elder
brother Suparno, who represented Indonesia in the 1983 World Cup
when Pondok Indah hosted the prestigious golf championship,
carded a poor 76 yesterday after a 70 the day before. East Java's
Suprapto shot a 75 after making a 71 in the first round on
Tuesday, while West Java's Ahmad Indra (75) also failed to
maintain his good form of the first round when he too carded a
71.

In the women's event which will be contested over 56 holes,
Jakarta, as expected, took the early lead with a total score of
154. Five strokes behind in second place is North Sumatra and
third is West Java on 162.

Ani Iman from Jakarta took the lead in the individual
competition with a 76 (40 36), followed by Daud Yudarana, from
East Java, with a 77 (40 37) for second place. National player
Retno Mustari from Jakarta, had to be content with third place
after a 78 (39 39). (amd/rsl)
",
