Lamak, a collaborative work by two artists<\/p>\n

This is the first time for sculptor Pintor Sirait to
\ncollaborate with famous tropical garden designer Made Wijaya, aka
\nMichael White. The result is astonishing interior and exterior
\ndesigns of Lamak restaurant in Ubud, some 20 kilometers north of
\nDenpasar.<\/p>\n
The main concept of the restaurant's architectural style is a
\nblend of simple, traditional and elaborate contemporary Balinese
\nhousing styles.<\/p>\n
In the Balinese language, Lamak refers to a sacred ceremonial
\nutensil called lama, which is usually placed under a variety of
\nreligious offerings.<\/p>\n
\"Lamak has inspired and become the very essence of the entire
\ndesign of this restaurant,\" explained Pintor.<\/p>\n
The combination of traditional and contemporary elements in
\ndesigning the restaurant have created a simple work of art.<\/p>\n
A graduate with a Liberal Arts degree from the University of
\nNevada, Reno, in the U.S., Pintor focused more on steel
\nsculptures and metal works in his most recent work.<\/p>\n
Pintor put striking accents on the restaurant's doors, panels,
\nstairs and flooring. A prolific producer of unique art, he
\ndesigned steel chairs highlighted with red and green upholstery,
\na water container and many other items.<\/p>\n
It is easy for Pintor, who was born to an Indonesian-German
\nparents, to mix Balinese traditional and contemporary elements in
\nhis designs.<\/p>\n
\"I've been living in two different cultures for years and this
\nbackground has influenced my work,\" he said.<\/p>\n
He obtained a prestigious award from World Sculpture News in
\n2000.<\/p>\n
Although, he made quite a contribution to the restaurant
\ndesign, Pintor admitted that this was a result of good teamwork
\nwith Made Wijaya and his colleagues, I Gusti Sudjana, Nyoman
\nWiyoga, Dewa Putu Sedana and I Gusti Made Karang.<\/p>\n
\"You see, this ceramic tile with taro motifs was created by
\nMade Wijaya,\" Pintor said.<\/p>\n
Made explored various floral motifs mostly found in Yogyakarta
\nduring the Dutch colonial period.<\/p>\n
Made Wijaya is the author of several books including Tropical
\nGarden, The Complete Stranger in Paradise, Balinese Architecture
\nand contributed to Tropical Asian Style.<\/p>\n
I Gusti Sarjana said that the presence of Taro motifs on the
\nlounge and toilet floors had created a warm atmosphere within the
\nrestaurant's simple and clean interior design.<\/p>",
