Laksar Jihad and Maluku<\/p>\n
The presence of more than 3000 Laksar Jihad militiamen spread
\nacross Maluku and North Maluku, and concentrated on Pulau Dama,
\nMorotai and Galela, should soon be ended. They must be asked to
\nleave Maluku, as their presence is more harming than benefiting
\nthe peace efforts carried out by the government.<\/p>\n
The statement by their commander, Ustadz Jafar Umar, that they
\nwill remain in Ambon is very nonconducive for reconciliation in
\nMaluku. Indeed, it is a purposeful effort to make it difficult
\nfor the Indonesian government to solve the Maluku problem. If it
\nis left as it is, it will directly or indirectly trouble
\nPresident Abdurrahman Wahid's government, because if Maluku is
\nnot peaceful, the government will be considered incapable of
\novercoming and controlling Ambon, which also means that people
\nwill be much more tempted to invite foreign intervention.<\/p>\n
Foreign intervention could take the form of the deployment of
\nmultinational troops or a blockade of Indonesia. If such things
\noccur, the victims will be all of the Indonesian people. Two
\nhundred million Indonesian people will suffer because of Ustadz
\nJafar Umar and his 3000 Laksar Jihad troops. Vice President
\nMegawati has visited Maluku several times, but it seems her
\nvisits are fruitless, thwarted not only by Jakarta intellectuals
\nbut also by groups from outside Maluku.<\/p>\n
Let the Maluku people solve their own problems; outsiders
\nshouldn't meddle in their problems. The government should only
\nprovide them the facilities, while the security apparatuses
\nshould maintain the process. In restoring order, the police
\nshould act first, assisted by the military. There's no need to
\nwear any masks, including the \"bringing\" of a noble religion in
\nthe interests of individuals or groups.<\/p>\n
The history of Indonesia shows that rebellions in religious
\nguises can be crushed by the government, namely by the apparatus.
\nTherefore, in this reform era, never let certain groups of people
\nforce the security forces to take unconstitutional measures.<\/p>\n
