Lack of priority stifles rights implementation<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): A lack of priority remains a major obstacle to
\nhuman rights implementation in Indonesia, a member of the
\nNational Commission on Human Rights says.<\/p>\n
Commission deputy chairman Marzuki Darusman said trade and
\ninvestment interests too often surpassed human rights concerns.<\/p>\n
Marzuki was speaking yesterday after attending a meeting on
\nthe formation of the National Working Group on Human Rights.<\/p>\n
\"In the future, it (human rights) should be given the same
\npriority,\" he said.<\/p>\n
He pointed out that human rights were still connected to
\neconomic developments thus creating a limited human rights
\npolicy.<\/p>\n
\"Human rights should not be viewed from an economic
\nperspective alone, but also from social, cultural and political
\nperspectives,\" he told The Jakarta Post.<\/p>\n
The National Working Group on Human Rights was designed to be
\npart of an overall regional mechanism on human rights among
\nmembers of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).<\/p>\n
The idea to form national working groups was first introduced
\nlast year. So far, Indonesia, the Philippines, Thailand and
\nMalaysia are countries which have established working groups.<\/p>\n
It was hoped that the advent of a regional mechanism would
\nfacilitate more dialog in ASEAN on human rights issues. Marzuki
\nsaid the dialog was expected to lay the foundation for more open
\ndiscussions on human rights.<\/p>\n
He expressed hope that it would overcome the present
\ndifficulties ASEAN faced when there were discussions on human
