Indonesia's Labour Minister Yassierli has announced preparations for a comprehensive Protection Law for Platform Workers, with 2026 listed as a priority year, though it remains unclear whether the initiative will originate from the government or parliament. The proposed legislation will address rights and protections for platform workers, including ride-sharing drivers, as well as other informal sector workers in agriculture, fishing, and maritime industries, requiring coordination across multiple government ministries.

The Minister of Labour (Menaker) Yassierli has revealed that
preparations are underway for a Protection Law for Platform Workers.

“Our ultimate goal is to have special regulations for them (platform
workers), and that should be legislation,” the Labour Minister said
during a podcast recording with ANTARA news agency at the Labour
Ministry offices in Jakarta on Wednesday.

“Alhamdulillah, 2026 is already on the priority list for the
Protection Law for Platform Workers, but it has not yet been decided
whether this will be a government initiative or a parliamentary
initiative,” he added.

Furthermore, Yassierli stated that one important aspect in the
discussion of this regulation concerns the rights and protection of
platform workers, including partners of ride-sharing motorcycle drivers
(ojol).

“In the legislation, we certainly hope to reflect our concern for
them, or determine how online drivers and ride-sharing partners can
transparently receive their rightful rights,” he said.

In addition, the Labour Minister stated that regulations will also be
prepared regarding the protection of other informal sector workers such
as plantation workers, fishing workers, and others.

“For example, those working as ship crew members, how working hours
should be arranged, and so on. We need to go through this
systematically,” said Yassierli.

“This must be harmonised with the relevant ministries. So for
example, if plantation worker protection later needs to coordinate with
the Agriculture Minister, and ship crew protection must involve the
Transportation Minister, the Marine and Fisheries Minister, and so on,”
the Labour Minister said.
",
