Labor exporters seek for Nasiroh's release<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The association of Indonesian labor export
\ncompanies, Apjati, will seek leniency from the Saudi Arabian
\ngovernment to release Indonesian worker Nasiroh, convicted of
\nmurder, in the upcoming Ramadhan fasting month.<\/p>\n
Chairman of the association Rusdi Bahasuan said yesterday the
\nrequest was extended because the kingdom used to grant mercy and
\nremission to prisoners in the Moslem holy month.<\/p>\n
According to the lunar calendar, Ramadhan will start in late
\nDecember.<\/p>\n
\"We all have to try and pray (for her release). Hopefully we
\nwill succeed,\" Rusdi told Antara after receiving a honorary medal
\nfrom the Minister of Manpower Abdul Latief. Rusdi had just
\narrived from Saudi Arabia.<\/p>\n
\"If our request is approved, Nasiroh will hopefully be able to
\ncelebrate Idul Fitri holiday at home,\" Rusdi added.<\/p>\n
The medal was awarded to those who helped Nasiroh escape the
\ndeath penalty. Waleed Al Swaidan, chairman of the committee for
\nforeign labor recruitment in Saudi, also received a medal.<\/p>\n
Nasiroh of Cianjur, West Java, was sentenced to death in 1993
\nafter she admitted to having killed her employer Saleh Al Senedi.
\nShe had her death penalty reduced to five years of imprisonment
\non Oct. 29 after one of Senedi's wives decided to forgive her.<\/p>\n
The milder sentence means that 26-year-old Nasiroh will leave
\nGassim City penitentiary in September next year.<\/p>\n
Swaidan said the court ruled Nasiroh was guilty because she
\nconfessed three times to murdering Senedi, although four fellow
\nemployees testified she had not.<\/p>\n
Latief said Tuesday that Nasiroh told her visiting brother
\nAbdul Majid that she admitted to the murder, but it was actually
\nher Bangladeshi boyfriend who killed Senedi after learning that
\nNasiroh's employer had sexually harassed her several times.<\/p>\n
Nasiroh's case led to a public outcry and pressured the
\ngovernment to seek every means to save her. In September, another
\nIndonesian worker in Saudi, Soleha Kadiran, was executed after
\nbeing found guilty of killing her employer. (amd)<\/p>",
