Labor export body threatens old board<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The new executive board of the Indonesian
\nAssociation of Labor Exporters (APJATI) threatened yesterday to
\nrevoke the membership of a number of former leaders if they fail
\nto present accounts of their terms in office.<\/p>\n
The new board, led by Abdullah Puteh, has set Nov. 1 as the
\ndeadline for the former leaders to present accounts on financial
\nmatters and of how they had run the organization.<\/p>\n
Members of the former executive board, led by Mahfud Zaelani,
\nhave refused to recognize the new board elected at a congress in
\nSeptember. They also refuse to account for their terms in office.<\/p>\n
\"The congress contravened the organization's statute,\"
\nMahfud's board said in a statement.<\/p>\n
Association Secretary General Anthon Sihombing told reporters
\nthat Mahfud and his friends would be expelled from the
\norganization if they ignored the deadline. Action could be taken
\non the grounds that Mahfud's supporters have launched attacks
\nagainst the new leadership and the government, he said.<\/p>\n
The new board would ask the government to revoke the operation
\npermits granted to Mahfud and his friends' labor supply
\ncompanies, said Anthon.<\/p>\n
Anthon with deputy chairman on organizational affairs Ayub
\nSalamah, said he had a suspicion there may have been financial
\nmismanagement during Mahfud's term.<\/p>\n
At least Rp 6 billion (US$25.3 million) has been collected
\nfrom 128 labor export companies and over 125,000 workers since
\nthe organization was formed in 1995, he said.<\/p>\n
Malik Aliun, a former member of the advisory council to the
\norganization and an ally of Mahfud, said recently that his group
\nrefused to recognize Puteh's board because the congress was held
\nin violation of the organization's statute.<\/p>\n
He said his group would file a suit against Minister of
\nManpower Abdul Latief and Director General for Labor Replacement
\nJacky Iskandarsyah for issuing a permit for the congress. The
\nlawsuit will be filed at the Jakarta Administrative Court.<\/p>\n
Mahfud was not available for comments yesterday.<\/p>\n
Mahfud's supporters are Jafar Bazamal, former procurator,
\nRustam Yusuf, former secretary general, and former marketing
\ndivision chief Achmad Bafaqi. (rms)<\/p>",
