Labor dispute settled<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The employees and management of PT Duta Busana
\nDanastri garment factory have agreed to abolish the controversial
\nnight shift system that the company introduced as a subtle way to
\nkick out protesting workers.<\/p>\n
The company also agreed in a meeting sponsored by the National
\nCommission on Human Rights on Saturday not to dismiss the
\nprotesting workers.<\/p>\n
No less than the commission's secretary general, Baharuddin
\nLopa, and a high ranking official of the Ministry of Manpower,
\nAmrinal, mediated the meeting between nine labor leaders, three
\nlegal representatives of the protesters and two managers and a
\nlawyer for the company.<\/p>\n
In a related development, the management denied that its
\nprominent customer, the San Francisco-based Levi Strauss & Co,
\nthe manufacturer of Levi's and Dockers clothing, had formally
\nstopped placing orders with the Jakarta-based PT Duta Busana
\nDanastri.<\/p>\n
\"We're sure that Levi Strauss is not reckless enough to break
\nour relationship. And we're sure that Levi Strauss will examine
\nthe problem objectively,\" vice-chairwoman Elliani Sapta Dewi
\nsaid, referring to the recent statement by the jeans giant which
\nstated that it has decided to terminate its contract with PT Duta
\nBusana.<\/p>\n
According to Lopa, both sides were satisfied with the progress
\nmade at the two-hour meeting, adding that the next round of talks
\nwould be held at the company's office.<\/p>\n
\"The commission and the ministry, however, will lend a helping
\nhand in case the negotiations wind up deadlocked,\" he said.(09)<\/p>",
