        "content": "<p>Labor activists charged with libel<\/p>\n<p>JAKARTA (JP): Two employees of Bank Panin have been sent to<br>\nthe Central Jakarta District Court on charges of defaming the<br>\nbank&apos;s assistant director for supervision.<\/p>\n<p>The defendants, Imam Sutrisno and Tata Zoelkarnaen, both<br>\nexecutives of the Bank Panin Labor Union (SPBP) in Jakarta, have<br>\nbeen accused of defaming Akijat Lukito. This relates to his<br>\nalleged intimidation of seven members of the Cirebon, West Java,<br>\nchapter of SPBP, forcing them to leave the union.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;The defendants had written a complaint letter and sent the<br>\ncopies to, among others: all SPBP chapters, Bank Panin chapters,<br>\nthe UN International Labor Organization, the National Commission<br>\nfor Human Rights, Bank Indonesia and the Minister of Manpower,&quot;<br>\nprosecutor R. Sitanggang told the court on Monday.<\/p>\n<p>In the letter dated Oct. 11, 2000, Sitanggang said, the<br>\ndefendants asked Akijat to make a written apology to SPBP within<br>\nthree days.  If he failed to do so they threatened to file a<br>\ncomplaint with the police or other institutions for violating<br>\nArticle 28 of 2000 Constitution which stipulates the freedom to<br>\nbuild or join a workers union.<\/p>\n<p>As a result, Akijat reported them to the police on libel<br>\ncharges.<\/p>\n<p>The hearing will resume on May 8 to hear the defendants&apos;<br>\nobjection.(bby)<\/p>",
