Kyongsangnam-do province eyes East Java business<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): East Java and Kyongsangnam-do province of South
\nKorea have established a sister province relationship in an
\neffort to promote closer business relations between the two
\nprovinces and their two countries in general.<\/p>\n
"The purpose of the sister province relationship is to promote
\nunderstanding and friendship at both national and regional
\nlevels," the chief of Kyongsangnam-do's Economy and Trade Bureau,
\nChang-Seung Kong, said.<\/p>\n
Kong told journalists here yesterday that the agreement was
\nsigned in Surabaya, East Java, by the governors of both
\nprovinces, Basofi Soedirman of East Java and Hyuk-Kyu Kim of
\nKyongsangnam-do.<\/p>\n
A 25-member business delegation from Kyongsangnam-do, led by
\nGovernor Kim, ended its mission here yesterday.<\/p>\n
Kim noted that East Java and Kyongsangnam-do have a number of
\nsimilarities. Both provinces, for example, serve as main
\nproducers of rice and main industrial sites in their countries.<\/p>\n
In Surabaya, the Kyongsangnam-do delegation attended an
\ninvestment forum to sound out the possibility of expanding
\nbusiness relations between the two provinces by increasing
\nbilateral trade and investments.<\/p>\n
Yesterday the delegation gave a presentation before Indonesian
\nbusinesspeople on Kyongsangnam-do province's export capabilities.<\/p>\n
According to Indonesia's Central Bureau of Statistics,
\nbilateral trade between Indonesia and South Korea totaled US$5.3
\nbillion last year, up from $4.6 billion in 1994. Indonesia
\nenjoyed a trade surplus of $476 million last year and $427
\nmillion in 1994. (rid)<\/p>",
