Kyongju Hilton closes<\/p>\n
SEOUL (Reuter): Hit by a strike, the Hilton Hotel in South
\nKorea's tourist resort of Kyongju closed yesterday as industrial
\naction spread across the country.<\/p>\n
All guests at the Kyongju Hilton had been moved to other
\nhotels, general manager John Kidd said by telephone.<\/p>\n
He said 120 unionized workers were occupying the lobby in
\ndefiance of a lockout declared on Friday. Talks on pay and
\nworking conditions had broken off until after the weekend.<\/p>\n
The closure came one day after riot police raided the Hilton
\nin Seoul. Several hours later, union and management at the Seoul
\nHilton reached an agreement.<\/p>\n
Media reports said it was the first time authorities had used
\nforce against strikers in the current wave of industrial unrest.<\/p>\n
But more raids were likely in South Korea next week as the
\nunion of the government mint, Korea Security Printing and Minting
\nCorp., said yesterday it would go on strike.<\/p>\n
\"We took a vote yesterday, and we decided to go on strike from
\nTuesday,\" said a union official.<\/p>\n
Company officials could not be reached for comment.<\/p>\n
A strike at the mint is illegal as the South Korean government
\nimposed arbitration on Wednesday that automatically prevents
\nworkers from taking industrial action for 15 days.<\/p>",
