Kwitang Sub-district, Central Jakarta, has launched a programme to\nexchange organic and inorganic waste for nutritious food items and cash,\naimed at reducing waste accumulation at the residential level.<\/p>\n
Kwitang Head, Ferry Zahrudin, stated that the programme is being\nimplemented across RW 01 to RW 09, with waste weighing conducted\nregularly every Friday morning at the Kwitang Sub-district Office\ncourtyard.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe collection mechanism is flexible. Residents can bring waste\ndirectly to the sub-district office or utilise pick-up services at local\nRW posts,\u201d Ferry said in a written statement in Jakarta on Friday.<\/p>\n
He explained that the programme is run through a collaboration\nbetween the Kwitang Sub-district, the Family Welfare Empowerment Team\n(TP PKK), and Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) partners, as part of\nthe implementation of Governor\u2019s Instruction Number 5 of 2026.<\/p>\n
According to him, the exchange mechanism differs based on the type of\nwaste, whether organic or inorganic.<\/p>\n
\u201cOrganic waste is collected, recorded, and handed over to the\nEnvironmental Agency (Sudin LH) to be processed into products, such as\nfertiliser,\u201d said Ferry.<\/p>\n
Currently, he noted, the exchange is limited to vegetables and fresh\nfood items. However, the authorities are looking into expanding the\nprogramme\u2019s benefits in the future.<\/p>\n
\u201cIf future evaluations are positive, we will consider a mechanism to\nexchange waste for basic necessities, such as rice and cooking oil, for\nresidents with the largest waste collections, to further motivate the\ncommunity,\u201d Ferry added.<\/p>\n
Sherly, a local participant, noted that while waste collection by the\nEnvironmental Agency and PPSU officers already occurs three times a\nweek, the addition of trade-in incentives provides further motivation\nfor residents.<\/p>\n
She assessed the programme as highly beneficial because waste can be\ndirectly exchanged for nutritious foods, such as cassava, sweet\npotatoes, and vegetables.<\/p>\n
For most residents, she added, the monetary value of the waste is not\nthe primary priority, but rather the long-term environmental impact.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhat is important to us is how waste reduction, especially organic\nwaste, can be maintained for the future.
